The Internet has transformed everything, including the music business. But exactly what that transformation entails is perpetually up in the air. All we know is that the Net's important to musicians — especially indies, for whom it represents a way around the established business models that have heretofore kept them on the commercial sidelines.

John Dawes and Tim Sweeney have written a comprehensive and reasonably up-to-date account of the Web's promotional capabilities. The Complete Guide offers a well-organized step-by-step plan indie musicians may use to fully exploit the Internet. Of course, the Web's dynamic nature makes everything subject to change without notice, and this book falls victim to several such changes — some sites and services it mentions are defunct, for example (and surely the authors are the last people on earth using the term IBM compatible). Overall, however, readers will be hard put to find a better how-to guide on the subject.
